Fast hardware back

Guys,

I am looking for a lighter replacement for Octopussy, since she suffered quite badly from the trip to I3D earlier this year (I stuffed the 20Kg machine in my suitcase). So far I found two options:

- A quad-core laptop, up to 2.66Ghz (e.g., the Eurocom Phantom 900C or so, 5.2Kg, nice model name);

- A quadcore barebone system, 4.5Kg, I believe Asus has one with up to 2.95Ghz, and the option to overclock.

Does anyone know of something more extreme, but equally or more transportable? Any eight-core barebones?

- Jacco.

Can you wait for a couple of months? If yes then you could get a 45nm Penryn quadcore based system. It probably isn't much lighter than Core2 but will probably be faster per-clock

I think I'll have to be a little bit patient, there is indeed some cool stuff coming: Those new 8-cores and the mobile quad cores. I'm not sure I can wait for that though. [SMILEY Smile]

just a thread bump to say... 12ghz of processing power absolutely rules :) cpu reaches 45 degrees under full load with the poopy stock heatsink and stock voltage; after replacing that cooler with the massive one i've ordered and a minor voltage bump 3.4ghz should be attainable.

as a point of comparison, the "sponge" scene that comes with sunflow renders in almost exactly 1 minute!

Wait for the Penryns or the 2Ghz+ AMD K10 Barcelona... then fry them using some extreme overclocking for extra speed [SMILEY stick out tongue]

Also wait for DDR3 2133Mhz to be homologated.

Btw, for Nehalem you will need a new chipset because gonna require a VGA/HDMI/DisplayPort output connector on the motherboard.

phenom is of course a serious contender, but penryn is just an incremental improvement... probably my next upgrade will be for nehalem, or whatever amd strike back (?) with.
