Slashdot back

Slashdot is running a story on realtime ray tracing. Quite interesting to read how little people know about the subject, and how people with very limited knowledge present themselves as gurus. [SMILEY Smile]

So, when will someone from this forum post an arcticle about their real-time ray tracer to slashdot [SMILEY Razz]

Too bad most people commentig there don't know anything about the subject. Or to be more precise they don't know the achievements of past five years. I tend to have similar flamew^H^H^H^H^H^Hconversations about RT vs rasterizing. Most of the time I'm simply copying links to presentations that show most of what others talk about is wrong or the problems are solved [SMILEY Smile]

Also one thing that people usually don't understand: FPU power is cheap, memory bandwidth is expensive.

AFAIK, RT uses less bandwidth than rasterizing to achieve similar image quality.

I think it´s funny [SMILEY Smile] Especially since they always compare specialized raster hardware with general purpose cpus.

I've been reading /. since it was hosted on Malda's homepage. Never made a comment. Until today.

I mean 2003 has called and wants its coherent raytracing back.

On the other hand there's a SciAm article on that same topic so...

Slashdot just get depressing though take:
(L) [2006/08/30] [greenhybrid] [Slashdot] Wayback!

64 rays per pixel for aa?

I allways thought you need 64x64x64 because of the three dimensions, and even more (64^4) for time-dependent, motion blurred rendering...

kidding, just wanted to say: DARN

In germany we say "Stammtischparolen" for it. "Stammtisch"=The place in the bar you sit at every week with your friends, and after a couple of beers you seriously talk shit about things you never were deep in to...

If you like headache then google for some raytracing in german coding-phorums, situtation there is even worse (ignorance ad infinitum)
